Abstract

This paper examines the role of rhythm in screenplays during the transition from silent to sound film. The analysis is based on American screenplays written between 1927 and 1932, as well as the screenplay for Ein Herr auf Bestellung (Germany, 1930, Géza von Bolváry). It demonstrates that rhythm is embedded in screenplays through a variety of forms and notational practices. Screenplays from the early sound era often contain detailed instructions concerning music and sound, which serve to organize audiovisual elements temporally. In this context, rhythm emerges as a key device for shaping and coordinating the relationship between image and sound.
