Abstract

This article examines the problematic separation of sound design and film music in the contemporary film production process and develops the concept of sonic storytelling as an integrative approach. Based on the thesis that the fragmentation of sound design leads to artistically unsatisfactory results, the establishment of a Creative Audio Director is proposed as a solution. This profession – comparable to that of a composer – functions as a conceptual designer who understands sound design and film music not as separate layers, but as elements of a complex musical composition. With reference to Michel Chion’s concept of ›audio-vision‹ and Pierre Schaeffer’s ›musique concrète‹, it is argued that a successful soundtrack combines the horizontal development of motivic elements with their vertical interaction with the moving image, whilst taking into account both the acousmatic and semantic dimensions of sound.
