Abstract

This article explores the production processes of Hollywood film scoring in the 2010s within the interrelation of digitalization, commercialization, and aesthetic romanticism. Drawing on a qualitative content analysis of film composer interviews, it identifies key phases of the scoring process and presents further findings regarding composers’ self-conceptions and the aesthetic functions of film music. The analysis reveals that, despite digital workflows and industrial constraints, romantic ideals—such as the notion of the musical genius, the idealization of the orchestra, and the pursuit of authenticity—continue to exert a formative influence. At the same time, the study distinguishes between four composer types that exemplify various transformations and renegotiations of these paradigms.
